Interview with Photographer Paolo Bergamelli

Ciao Paolo e grazie per questa intervista, come è nata in te la passione per la fotografia?

Ciao Laura, prima di tutto grazie ancora per il riconoscimento. Kenna è stato uno dei miei punti di riferimento per quanto riguarda l'essenzialità delle immagini, le atmosfere, i tempi lunghi. Aver ricevuto un riconoscimento su un tema a lui dedicato per me è un grosso onore.

La mia passione per la fotografia risale alla metà degli anni 80 quando per puro caso mi trovai ad acquistare da un amico una reflex usata per scattare un po' di fotografie durante le vacanza. Inutile dire che la cosa mi affascinò da subito e la voglia di migliorare quegli scatti mi spinse a perseverare.

Hai dei generi preferiti?

I due generi che prediligo sono i paesaggi e le architetture. Mi piace guardare con occhio attento i particolari e cercare di ricavarne il meglio possibile. Mi piacciono molto anche le street, ma non mi capita così frequentemente di essere nei luoghi ideali per poterle realizzare.

Sviluppi fotografie in digitale attualmente hai scattato o scatti anche in analogico?

Per 15 anni ho usato l'analogico con qualche esperienza di camera oscura, adesso scatto solo in digitale. Non ho mai avuto rimpianti in proposito, anzi. Poter controllare l'intero flusso, dall'idea alla stampa, è stato il meglio che potessi desiderare. 

Arrivare al risultato in autonomia è la più grande conquista che il digitale ci ha offerto.

Quali sono per te i fattori più importanti in una fotografia?

Difficile dire quali siano le caratteristiche fondamentali di una buona fotografia. Personalmente punto molto sulla composizione, sull'essenzialità del contenuto e sul fatto di riuscire a trovare, in fase di "sviluppo" il mood più consono all'atmosfera che ho colto. Molti autori puntano molto sul messaggio, io credo che un'immagine possa anche essere solo bella in relazione ad un fatto puramente estetico (vedi ad esempio le architetture)

Sogni nel cassetto in questa tua passione?

Nessun sogno nel cassetto. La fotografia per me resta una passione e un piacere. Mi ha dato molte soddisfazioni, ma la mia vita e la mia professione corrono in altra direzione. Mi piace sperimentare e da un paio di anni utilizzo molto l'iPhone con grande soddisfazione. Ecco, se dovessi pensare ad un sogno nel cassetto, mi piacerebbe molto riuscire ad allestire una mostra fotografica di immagini scattate con il telefonino.

Hello Petra photographers and how long you have some favorite genre?

I started photography during a trip to Tibet. Al on automatic with an analog camera. That was in 2007. the results were surprising. I decided to start learning moore about the technical aspects. And so I did the last two years. My favorite genre is documentary, traveling to countries and try to catch the live there as it is in its purest . Living together with the local people to capture their lives.

This shot with which you won the theme of Steve McCurry did you develop it in some of your trip?

The picture of the young man in the train I made during my trip in India. Delhi. I was waiting and sitting on the ground on the station and looking around. Then I drown in the moment as I calle it. To describe the feeling.

What are the determining factors for you in the photograph?

Describing the determing factor for me in the fotograph is difficult. For me it is a kind of "feeling" to klik on the rigth moment. I do not think. I wait, see, feel. You cannot forsee the moment always. Also important for me is to do things with respect, threat people with respect and not force something. Once I saw a unique moment but to capture that i had to act like a kind of paparazzi, and that is something I wont`t do.

When I saw the picture at home from the boy in the train I wrote the words "It is just a train, you are going on a trip with a destination, there where you want to go. It is not a jail, with bars to keep you detained, it is just to keep you safe, temporary. Freedom is your goal,and as soon as the train stops on the place where you want to be".

The last thing I want to say is that , although the technical aspect is very important but it is the art of catching the soul of the moment to create a frozen moment in eternal time.

Your desires and projects in the photography?

My dream is to pack my bags and travel. Make photos .

Another goal of my photographie is  Dance.  I danced all my life and just started to taking photos of theater dance. Also one of my passions. Also ther you have to catch the rigth moment of passion and movement. It is a totally other project.

How did you start taking pictures? 


I start taking pictures with two friends of mine that invite me to make a trip to Mendoza year 1980 , one of the provinces of Argentina and I agree to go with them. My father provide me his manual and mechanical camera with only one lens and from that moment I could never stop taking pictures.










What are the aspects of photography that fascinate you most?

The aspects of photography that really fascinate me is naturally the language of light. Maybe in landscapes, macro, portrait in all the themes in photography, the correct use of the light make the difference between a very good image and another that´s not so good. All our effort as photographers is behind to make a correct reading of the situation and put our knowledge to capture what the light is making with its language to make a photograph supreme.











Are you inspired by any particular photographer for your photos?

On the first years of photography, my first Inspiration was a great photographer from Argentina that was considered one of the 10 best photographers of the world and his name was Pedro Luis Raota. Afterwards when I take my specialty in lighting and studio, another great photographer of Argentina, Alfredo Willimburgh who was a fashion and advertising photographer in Atlantida Editorial. And from arround the world in portrait and fashion Richard Avedon, Herb Ritts in conceptual photography Jerry Uelsman and Misha Gordin, in documental photography Sebastian Salgado; Steve Mc Curry and Amy Vitale. On this days of internet, anyone have the oportunity to see the work of many photographers arround the world and all of them can be the inspiration for the new generations.










What gives you the picture and what you expect from your passion?

The photography is my passion, is my hobby, is my work, is my art, is my life.

I have the happiness to work thanks to my hobby and that´s all for me.

I am a photographer by vocation, by choice, by desicion.

I expect from my passion not to let die the enthusiasm and the effort in continue studying, developing and improve new ways of techniques that give me the tools to give the best of my art in the images that I show.

Come definiresti il tuo approccio con il mondo esterno?

Beh credo che il mondo reale è in continua evoluzione e la necessità di avvicinarsi all' ispirazione avviene con la mia macchina fotografica.

Penso che avvicinarsi al mondo reale è complicato, perché desidero che le mie foto riescano ad esprimere il più possibile la realtà di tutti i giorni in qualsiasi parte del mondo .

Penso che la tecnica può migliorare l'apprendimento e l'insegnamento , ma il momento decisivo è molto difficile, è qualcosa che avviene tra la mente,la fotocamera e il cuore .

Cosa ti ha ispira a catturare e che cosa significa per voi il bianco e nero ?

L'ispirazione per me è la vita e catturare le persone in un momento e tutto ciò mi risulta meraviglioso .

Per me il bianco e nero è tutto.

Per un lungo periodo di tempo ho dovuto educare i miei occhi.

Cercando di comporre con la massima forza espressiva e con la mia visione per il bianco e nero.

Studiando i colori in scala di grigio, ho appreso sicuramente da maestri come ( Ansel Adams ) e sviluppando il suo sistema di zonale per la fotografia analogica e ora digitale.

Quali sono i fotografi che ti ispirano nel tuo lavoro ?

Sono sempre stato influenzato da fotografi come Robert Capa , Cartier Bresson , ecc ....

Ma io cerco di essere sempre me stesso.

Como definirías tu acercamiento al mundo exterior ?

Bueno yo creo que el mundo real es cambiante continuamente y para poder acercarme a el necesito la inspiración y por supuesto mi cámara . Creo que acercarme al mundo real es complicado pues quiero que mis imágenes expresen lo maximo posible de la realidad diaria en cualquier parte del mundo. O de cualquier manera que tengan alma , pienso que la técnica se puede aprender y mejorar pero enseñar ese momento decisivo es muy difícil , es algo que ocurre entre la mente el corazón y la cámara.

Que te inspiro para capturar ese momento en la composición y que significa para usted el blanco y negro ?

La inspiración para mi es la vida y su gente captar un momento maravilloso .Bueno para mi el blanco y negro lo es todo , durante mucho tiempo intente educar mis ojos para poder componer con la mayor fuerza posible y educar mi visión para el blanco y negro. Pasando los colores a la gama de grises, así que me siento mas seguro aprendiendo de grandes maestros como ( Ansel Adams ) y desarrollando su sistema de zonas para fotografía analógica y ahora para la digital.

Cuales son los fotógrafos que le inspiran en su trabajo ?

Siempre me influencio fotógrafos como Robert Capa , Cartier Bresson etc.… Pero intento ser yo mismo.

En que medida afecta el final el disparo.

Es el momento cumbre el disparo donde se juntan las tres cosas mas importantes la mente , el corazón y la cámara .

Ciao Raffaele e benvenuto su Pamphlet Project.

Raccontaci brevemente come ti sei avvicinato alla fotografia?

Mi sono avvicinato alla fotografia quasi per gioco, ma subito spinto da un qualcosa dentro che ancora oggi non riesco a percepire fino in fondo.

C’erano dei fotografi in famiglia, degli zii e dei cugini e un giorno chiesi di poter andare il pomeriggio a “lavorare” con loro e da lì cominciò la mia avventura nel mondo della fotografia.

Passarono gli anni, passarono davanti a me tante fotografie , tanti giorni e notti di camera oscura.

All’età di sedici anni, un bel giorno, cominciò però la vera avventura nel mondo della fotografia, iniziai a lavorare per il mio maestro e da lì si aprirono nuovi orizzonti fin lì ancora a me sconosciuti, tant’è che ancora oggi non mi sono noti .

In questi diciasette anni penso di esser cresciuto molto grazie a chi mi ha insegnato a conoscere e gestire la macchina fotografica, ma soprattutto a capire che per me la fotografia non è un mezzo per stupire o spettacolarizzare le cose che mi circondano, ma nel riuscire a trasmettere quello che il mio pensiero e la mia anima riconoscono in ciò che mi sta attorno.

Parlaci del genere di fotografia per il quale ti sei specializzato e il motivo

per il quale ti senti coinvolto su questo genere?

Da qui il mio genere di fotografi si è andato man mano indirizzando verso un aspetto di tipo umanistico e di reportage.

Ho avuto una lunga esperienza fotografica per l’editoria, ho lavorato come reporter per delle testate regionali qui in Calabria.

Tutto questo mi ha permesso di fare molta esperienza in “strada” , con alcune conoscenze belle, altre meno.

Di certo mi hanno fatto comprendere e mi ha fatto conoscere parecchie persone, di qualunque dimensione sociale.

Quindi se dovessi scegliere il mio stile fotografico sarebbe quello del reportage e della street intesa come racconto di vita, un po’ alla Henri Cartier Bresson un po’ alla Robert Capa.

Qual’è la qualità più importante secondo te che un fotografo deve possedere?

La dote più importante che un fotografo secondo me deve avere, almeno io insegnerei questo a chi si avvicina alla fotografia, e quella di riuscire a trasmettere.

Una fotografia asettica può essere anche un’ottima fotografia, può essere anche la più premiata e riconosciuta fotografia, ma resterà solo fine a se stessa:

Per me uno scatto fotografico deve restare nel cuore e nella mente di chi la osserva!

Progetti futuri?

Il mio desiderio è quello, "presuntuosamente" parlando, di lasciare un piccolissimo segno del mio passaggio.

Vorrei essere ricordato per le emozioni che trasmettevano le mie fotografie.
